Constituted student body – what is that?

No food, not even an object, it is an institution of the university, all enrolled students are a member of it automatically, despite, they have resigned. The option of this formal exit is no secrecy (at least not for German students), because you could read about it for example on wikipedia. For the occasion, that there has been a flyer with the number 8/10/48-01 in some letter boxes of students, we, the representatives of the student committees, want to explain again the constituted student body and its part in the semester fee.

It is right, that non-members of the constituted student body pay a semester fee which is 7 € lower. These 7 € (out of the 84 € you pay all in all) per member are administrated by the student body council of university. It decides democratically upon the financial proposes of the members of the constituted student body and its committees – the body councils of the faculties – as well as the workgroups (AGs). Further information can be found here

The budget of the student body is used among other things for the consultation service of the body councils, the networking and training on student body conferences and the performance of workshops. It is required, that all these offers are open to all members of the constituted student body. Without the budget of the student body it would not be possible, to open the office of the student body council of the university weekdays 10 – 14 o’clock and to deal with all your request – from the sale of cards to the international student IDs.  Also, we could not improve the equipment of our rooms (Barbarakeller, offices) or purchase new technique (sound system, stove for mulled wine (Glühwein), etc.), which is used in events of the body councils and workgroups. Furthermore, we support the work of the KSS (conference of saxon student bodies), which represents the interests of students on the level of the Saxon state.

Most of all you can experience the use of your contribution in the cultural offer. We support events that are not targeted on maximal profit but enrich the university life. Among this cultural offer are the workgroups of the student body council and their events – like the scientific lectures, organized by the AG Umwelt (workgroup for environment) -, all events of the body councils of the faculties – like the Barbarafeier of FSR 3 on the 4th of December or Hüttengaudi of FSR 6 on 11th of December – and all events of the body council of the university – like the Weihnachtsbasteln (christmas handicrafts) on 17th of December. To get financial support for an independently planned event, you don’t have to be part of a workgroup or a committee. It is sufficient to be member of the constituted student body.

If the student body lacks money, the whole offer needs to be reduced. Less culture, less consultation, less networking, less training and so on. Your small part of the semester fee has a major influence on the community. Even if you do not take part yourself much, leave other students the chance to accept our offers!

Regarding the elections, the flyer contains misinformation. All enrolled students can vote at and run for the university elections of the committees senate (Senat), extended senate (erweiterter Senat) and council of the faculty (Fakultätsrat; don’t confuse it with the student body council of the faculty – Fachschaftsrat). Just for the elections of student representatives of the body council (Fachschaftsrat – FSR, Studentenrat – StuRa) the active and passive right to vote is limited to the members of the constituted student body.

Conclusion: The authors of the flyer do not offer an early Christmas present to us by suggesting a prospective saving of 7 €. On the contrary, it is in fact a letter against the interest of the student body, which entails restrictions in the cultural and consultation offer as well as an investment loss for technique and a decrease of student participation regarding the university decisions and everyday life.
